Leeds and Birmingham linked with Watford striker

According to today’s Sun, both Leeds United and Birmingham are interested in signing Watford striker Matej Vydra.

The 24-year-old Czech international spent last year on loan at Reading, scoring just twice in 22 league games.

However he has pedigree at this level, as he scored 20 times in Watford’s 2012/13 season in 41 games and then 16 times in Watford’s promotion season, and is also a full Czech international with five goals in 16 games.

Vydra is an interesting player – bags of pace and a capable striker in a front 2 or on his own, but struggled at Reading and made no appearances for Watford in the Premier League.

Leeds are in the market for a striker and see Vydra as the perfect foil for Chris Wood, hoping that he can recapture his Watford form and fire them into the top 6.

Birmingham City have looked toothless in recent friendlies and their fans are baying for a forward to add to the squad, and it was well-known that Rowett liked Vydra last year but was unwilling to pay the loan fee.

Last year Reading paid around £2m to take Vydra on loan but there is no suggestion as to what the fee would be this time around – but it would have to be lower for Birmingham to consider it.
