Sheff Utd target move for former Owls striker

The Sheffield Star reports that Sheffield United could make a move for Bury striker Leon Clarke. The 31-year-old has previously played his football in Sheffield, at Sheffield Wednesday. The English Football League journeyman could soon add Sheff Utd to his list of clubs.

Blades boss Chris Wilder is said to be targeting a physical striker to add to his Bramall Lane roster. With Billy Sharp the number one striker at the club, the former Northampton Town manager is keen to add another option to challenge being his strike partner.

Marc McNulty, Matt Done and Che Adams are all striker options for Wilder ahead of next season. However someone in the mould of Clarke would suit quite nicely. He proved his qualities in League One last season when firing in 18 goals for Bury. Wilder says he has several targets in mind,

“Everybody knows that we’re looking for a powerful striker, just something a little different to what we’ve already got.

“There’s a list of names and, yes, some of those we’ve looked at a little bit more than others. But that’s all they are at the moment; names on a list.

“Ideally, we’d like a big strong lad, who knows the league and has proved he can get goals in it. But, like I say, there might be some who don’t fit all of those criteria but who we think can still do the job.”

Clarke began his career at Wolves, and would re-join the club later in his career. He has also represented the likes of Coventry City, Chesterfield, Southend, Scunthorpe and many more. There is supposedly a chance Clarke could be allowed to leave Bury as they reduce their wage budget at Gigg Lane.
