Robins in the dark over former loanee’s future

Bristol City’s hopes of signing former loanee defender Adam Matthews have been left in limbo according to the Bristol Post.

The 24 year old Swansea born full back spent a short time at Ashton Gate at the end of last season after being loaned to the club by parent club Sunderland and Bristol City manager Lee Johnson is keen to bring the player back to the Championship club on a permanent basis.

Sunderland are thought to be ready to cut their losses on the player with Matthews making just two appearances for the club since joining The Black Cats from Glasgow giants Celtic for a reported £2 million transfer fee last summer however any potential deal will hinge on the Wearsiders signing a replacement right back.

Matthews’ move to the South West looked set to be sealed with Sunderland on the verge of signing former Newcastle United full back Davide Santon however that potential deal has collapsed and could now impact on The Robins’ hopes of landing their target.

Right back Matthews started his career with Cardiff City and went on to make 48 appearances for The Bluebirds scoring one goal for the club. The player joined Celtic in summer 2011 on a free transfer after Matthews left Cardiff City and the right back went on to become an important part of the squad at Celtic Park making 148 appearances for the club and scoring five goals.

Bristol City may now have to bide their time if they are to bring Matthews back to Ashton Gate.
