Ipswich linked with move for Blackburn winger

The Sun (July 10th, Page 62) understands that Ipswich Town could make a move to sign Elliott Bennett from Blackburn Rovers. Tractor Boys boss Mick McCarthy is keen to sign a winger this summer after they missed out on a deal to sign now Blackburn winger Liam Feeney.

27-year-old Bennett has spent the past five seasons at Carrow Road with Ipswich’s local rivals Norwich City, playing over 70 times, although many have been as a substitute. He was involved in Blackburn’s first pre-season friendly against Austrian side Ried over the weekend.

Bennett has somewhat struggled to play consistency over the last few seasons. He began last season on loan at Bristol City from Norwich. In January, he made the move to Ewood Park and that deal has since been made permanent.

It is no secret that McCarthy wants to sign a winger to play at Portman Road next season. There is every chance they could re-sign Ainslie Maitland-Niles on loan from Arsenal, just as they did last season. Ryan Fraser is unlikely to re-join as Bournemouth elected to let Matt Ritchie join Newcastle United. Feeney was a player McCarthy was desperate to sign. To ease the blow, he will hope Blackburn can do him a favour by selling Bennett.

He only signed a two-and-a-half year contract in January, but Blackburn have changed managers since then. Coyle will want to run the rule over Bennett in pre-season friendlies, but Ipswich are clearly keen to snap up the former Brighton & Hove Albion man.
