Newcastle edge closer to signing as defender left out of squad

Newcastle have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Grant Hanley as the defender is not in the Blackburn squad in today’s friendly.

However, Newcastle journalist Lee Ryder has confirmed that the defender is still in Austria with the rest of the Blackburn squad.

Rumours surrounding the Scottish defender have been circulating for the whole summer, with Newcastle reportedly big fans of Hanley, and this could indicate that Hanley will be on the move.

The Newcastle Chronicle reported that two bids had gone in for the Blackburn player but were both rebuffed, which would mean that Hanley will cost a decent fee.

Hanley came through the youth set-up at Blackburn and has Premier League and Championship experience, as well as making 24 appearances for Scotland.

He has been a consisten performer and a regular member of Blackburn’s starting line-up, which is a major reason for their reluctance to sell.

However, should they receive a high enough offer – believed to be around £5m – they may be forced to sell to the Tyneside club.

Hanley memorably scored the winner at Old Trafford when Blackburn won 3-2 back in 2011, which given Blackburn’s precarious position in the Championship last year, seems a very long time ago.
