Blades consider move for versatile Brentford defender

League 1 promotion hopefuls Sheffield United are weighing up a move for Brentford defender Jack O’Connell according to Get West London.

New Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder is currently overseeing a complete overhaul of the squad at Bramall Lane and has identified the out of favour Bees defender as a possible target.

The Liverpool born defender is comfortable playing at centre half and as a full back and could be available for transfer this summer after failing to make a significant impact on the Brentford first team.

O’Connell is a product of the academy set up at Blackburn Rovers but the player made just one appearance at senior level for the Lancashire club. The defender made up for the lack of opportunities at Ewood Park by gaining plenty of playing experience during loan spells at other Football League clubs.

The youngster made 76 appearances and scored five goals during loan spells with Rotherham United, York City and Rochdale and after failing to win a place in the side at parent club Blackburn Rovers, O’Connell joined Championship rivals Brentford in February 2015.

O’Connell has endured further Championship frustration at Griffin Park with the defender making just 18 appearances for The Bees and scoring one goal in almost 18 months with the West London club and a return north could benefit both the club and the player.
