Long-serving defender set to leave Newcastle in 24 hours

The Shields Gazette has revealed that Newcastle United skipper Fabricio Coloccini is expected to leave the club within the next 24 hours. He will move back to Argentina and sign for Primera Division side San Lorenzo.

34-year-old Coloccini still has a year remaining on his St James’ Park contract. The centre back has recently spoken of his desire to return back to his native Argentina. Following relegation, he made his feelings known to manager Rafa Benitez. His exit should be confirmed shortly.

After eight seasons, the defender felt now was the right time to end his stay with the Magpies,

“With the relegation, they are pointing to a new plan with young people under 25 years old.

“So it is a matter of talking and then proposing to them my exit.

“At the moment, I have in mind going back to Argentine football.

“I want to go back to San Lorenzo and fulfil the dream of entering the pitch with my kids and retire there.”

The football club haven’t given any official word on the transfer talks between the two clubs. Nevertheless, Benitez has already been drawing up a shortlist of potential replacements.

So, after 272 appearances in the famous black and white jersey, Coloccini is moving on to pastures new. He will be missed at St James’ Park, that is for sure.
