McCarthy has new position idea for young Ipswich star

Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy has backed Teddy Bishop to solve the winger shortage conundrum in his squad. Speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times, McCarthy also revealed that he failed to sign Liam Feeney permanent. He signed for Blackburn Rovers.

The former Republic of Ireland coach also admitted that whilst there has been interest in Cameron Stewart, his Ipswich career is not necessarily over. Still, he believes Bishop has a big role to play next season.

With the likes of Ryan Fraser, Luke Varney, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Larsen Toure all leaving, McCarthy concedes there aren’t many wingers in his side. With that being the case, he says they might have to do something ‘slightly different’. Otherwise, players like Bishop could have a big part to play.

“I have to say, wingers are few and far between. I tried to sign Liam Feeney, but I’m not broken hearted. I wanted to sign him, but if he doesn’t want to come to me then it’s his loss. We’ll get somebody else. We move on.

“I’ve had Bish (Teddy Bishop) play right side of midfield. If he stays fit then who’s to say he can’t play there? He’s quick enough to do it and he’s got more ability than Liam, there’s no question about that.

“We might have to do something slightly different. It might not be wingers, it might be midfield players. I’m cool with that.”

The Tractor Boys are likely to scour the loan market for new recruits. Re-signing Maitland-Niles on loan from Arsenal remains a ‘possibility’. Ryan Fraser is unlikely to return from Bournemouth now Matt Ritchie has joined Newcastle United. Reports that Tyrone Mings will re-join on loan are ‘wide of the mark at present’.
