Birmingham sign Derby defender on permanent deal

Birmingham City have signed Ryan Shotton from Derby County for an undisclosed fee as confirmed by the club website.

The 27-year-old defender originally signed for the Blues on loan back in January and had impressed in the nine appearances he made and ended up scoring one goal. It was obviously enough for the Birmingham manager Gary Rowett to go back and sign him on a permanent deal and he has signed a three year contract with the club.

When he signed for Birmingham back in January, Shotton was first used as a right back before playing in central defence for the rest of his time at the club. In the past he has also been known to play in midfield and even as an attacker and his versatility should come in useful as the Blues hope to launch another attempt to get into the play offs.

This summer Rowett’s main aim seems to be bringing back the players who were successful while on loan with them last season. The other signing that Birmingham have made this summer is Robert Tesche from Nottingham Forest after he had a good loan spell with the Blues last season. Now the speculation will begin to see who’ll be the next person to move to St Andrew’s.
