Brentford still plan for new stadium despite Brexit

Championship club Brentford still plan to move to a new purpose built stadium at Lionel Road despite Great Britain voting to leave the European Union according to Get West London.

As a result of last week’s controversial EU Referendum, 52% of the British public voted to leave the European Union. Since the result was announced, the country has become something of a media war zone with verbal exchanges of opinions taking place between rival ‘Vote Remain’ and ‘Vote Leave’ camps as the people of Britain await an uncertain future.

Despite the ongoing conflict in the country, Brentford have assured their supporters that the club’s move to a new 20,000 capacity all-seater stadium at Lionel Road will continue to progress.

On 1 April 2016, Hounslow Borough Council sought Government approval for a compulsory purchase order on the land where the new stadium will be built and the order was approved by the Authorities.

The granted compulsory purchase order means that Brentford can begin further advanced legal proceedings with a view to beginning work on their new Lionel Road home.

The club’s traditional Griffin Park ground is now outdated and provides the club with little opportunity to progress further and looks out of place in comparison to rival clubs’ facilities in the Championship. The new stadium will galvanise the club going forward providing The Bees with top class hospitality, conference and banqueting facilities and sporting facilities while also creating many jobs for the local community. The stadium will also offer activities for local children with wall climbing, cycling proficiency training and a learning zone all set to be staged at the stadium.

At this stage, construction costs are predicted to rise as a result of Britain’s proposed exit from the European Union however the message from officials at Brentford is that the club will deal with the consequences of the EU Referendum result as they arise and that fans should continue to look forward to watching the club play in a brand new stadium in 2018 as previously planned.
