Everton interest in Championship goalkeeper ‘serious’

Chronicle Live understands that new Everton manager Ronald Koeman is targeting a move for Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul.

Koeman, recently appointed at Goodison after leaving Southampton, hopes the fellow Dutchman will be his new number one.

Everton’s link to the player is believed to be genuine. Tim Howard has left the club this month to return to America. 28-year-old Krul is still recovering from a knee injury which has kept him out since October 2015.

Dutchman Patrick Lodewijks has also been named new goalkeeper coach at Everton. Having a big Dutch presence in addition to Premier League football could be an attractive proposition for Krul.

Koeman has been on record speaking of his admiration of Krul’s qualities. With Everton expected to have a decent budget this summer, producing a suitable bid shouldn’t be an issue.

Krul still has a year left on his St James’ Park contract. Much will depend if he is likely to extend beyond that should he stay. Newcastle may not want to risk losing the international shotstopper for free next summer.

The keeper changed his agent last year and has always held aspirations to play at the highest level consistently. He has proved his qualities with the Magpies and this isn’t the first time a team have been linked to him. Ex-Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has been rumoured to be interested in taking him to Crystal Palace in the past.
