Burton Albion defender announces retirement

Burton Albion defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff has confirmed his immediate retirement from football. The 33-year-old says he is now hoping to pursue a career as a coach.

Last season, the former Leeds United youngster played 33 times as the Brewers earned an unlikely promotion into the Sky Bet Championship. He broke the news on his Facebook page.

The Australian has managed to celebrate three promotions in the last five years, in addition to a Play-Off Final appearance. He feels now is the right time to call a halt to his playing career,

“For my friends and family who don’t know, I had decided to retire from English football after 17 years and move home. I feel the time is right for the change.”

He added: “My fiancé and 4 boys who have always been by my side along the way will finally be able to experience what I’ve been nagging about for so long.

“I want to thank all my family, friends and fans for the support you have shown over the years through the good times and bad.

“I have met so many great people and experienced so many great things along the way.

“Football has been a huge part of my life for such a long time and the memories I have built will last forever, especially after the last 5 years with 3 promotions and a play off final.

“I will continue to play for as long as the body allows me and look to continue to develop as a coach.”

Cansdell-Sherriff can also count the likes of Tranmere Rovers, Shrewsbury Town and  Preston North End as former clubs of his. He played well over 350 matches during his playing days, also representing his country at Under-17 level.
