Manchester United striker Ashley Fletcher has rejected a new contract with the club, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post. He is a transfer target for Leeds United, whilst Bristol City, Wolves and Barnsley have been linked with the player.
His Old Trafford deal is due to expire next week and the 20-year-old has turned down an extension. However, Fletcher is likely to return to pre-season training with the Premier League giants. This is whilst he considers his next move.
The Red Devils would be entitled to compensation should their highly-rated youngster leave elsewhere and join a Championship club as expected. He ended last season winning promotion at Barnsley. They are very much in the race to sign him permanently.
Leeds believe that they are in a very strong position to lure the player to Elland Road. Massimo Cellino is prepared to meet the wage demands of the young striker. Bristol City and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also in the running, but have gone somewhat under the radar to a degree.
It was Fletcher’s impressive loan spell at Oakwell last season which saw his stock in the game rise. In addition to promotion, he helped the Tykes win the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. He scored eight goals in all competitions as Paul Heckingbottom’s men ended the campaign strongly.
