Ipswich to rival Barnsley for 22-year-old League One forward

South London Press understands that Ipswich Town have entered the race to sign Charlton Athletic winger Callum Harriott. Championship rival Barnsley are also understood to have bid for the 22-year-old forward.

The League One club, now managed by Russell Slade, are not actively looking to sell the ex-Colchester loanee. He recently signed a new one-year contract to extend his stay at The Valley.

Nevertheless, Mick McCarthy is unlikely to be put off by that face. He is desperately looking to strengthen his squad ahead of next season. Harriott fired in three goals as the Addicks were relegated last season.

The Norbury-born youngster also expressed his versatility as well. Under Jose Riga, he tended to play more as an out-and-out striker on occasions. He has mainly played as a wide player during his career. Now aged 22, he is starting to mature and show different sides to his game.

It was a loan spell at Colchester last season which led to his parent club taking more notice of him. He started the season with the club, only to be shipped out to the League One strugglers. Before mid-December, he had already found the net on seven occasions in a struggling team.

It remains to be seen if Ipswich can produce a sufficient enough bid to tempt Charlton to part company with Harriott. He is highly-rated by the London club, but may want to play at Championship level.
