Leeds may be priced out of move for Barnsley centre back

Leeds United are hoping to sign Barnsley defender Alfie Mawson (The Sun through Daily Star). However it is believed the Tykes are set to place a big asking price on the head of the 22-year-old.

Earlier this week, chief executive Ben Mansford made the move from Oakwell to Elland Road. It remains to be seen if Mawson will be doing the same.

Leeds owner Massimo Cellino is keen on concluding a deal to bring Mawson to the club. Barnsley are unlikely to want to sell one of their prized assets to a local rival. Of course, Leeds are now a fellow Championship club as well.

Barnsley appointed Paul Heckingbottom as their permanent manager recently. He too is sure to want Mawson to remain with the club. Last season, Mawson played in a total of 58 matches for Barnsley. He scored seven goals in the process.

The former Brentford youngster’s stock in the game has grown rapidly over the last season. It was a loan spel at Wycombe which saw many take notice, leading to Barnsley signing him up.

During his time at Wycombe, he won the Players’ Player and Supporters’ Player of the Year Awards. Last season, he won another double at Barnsley, in the form of promotion and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
