Highly-rated Brentford youngster set to sign new deal

GetWestLondon understands that Brentford are closing in on a new contract for full back Josh Clarke. The impressive youngster made 12 first-team appearances last season, but is currently out of contract.

One of Dean Smith’s priorities this summer is to get the 22-year-old fixed to as longer-term deal at Griffin Park. The player wants more game-time next season and Smith looks set to hand him that opportunity.

The former Walsall boss suggested that agreeing terms are very close to being confirmed,

“I believe it’s close. When I left there were negotiations going on with the club and I didn’t think we were too far away. I hope it can get sorted.”

Clarke has also had loan spells at Stevenage and Barnet in recent seasons, where he was given a taste of the professional game.

He made his impact last season either at right back, or sometimes in a more advanced position. His versatility makes him a key player in any squad, especially a relatively small one such as Brentford.

During his loan spell at Barnet last season he scored three goals. They all came in October against York City, Oxford United and Exeter City. He was involved in a Brentford side that ended the Championship season extremely strongly. Of the eight games he played after returning from his loan, the Bees won six. Brentford will be hoping to call upon him next season.
