Sheffield Wednesday join Aston Villa and Hull in pursuit of Sunderland striker

Sheffield Wednesday are in pursuit of former Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher alongside Aston Villa and Hull City according to a report from the Daily Record via the Yorkshire Post.

Fletcher had been released from Sunderland in the summer after falling out of the first team and a move to Marseille, the team he spent the second half of the season on loan with, looks unlikely after he only scored once in nine games.

And that means the race to sign the Scottish international is on and already it was set to be an intense battle with Aston Villa, Hull City and Celtic all said to be interested in signing him. And now that battle is set to intensify after Sheffield Wednesday were reported to have joined that fight to sign Fletcher too.

After just missing out on promotion in the play off final, Wednesday have been looking to sign a new striker and have already been linked with Fletcher’s compatriot Ross McCormack. But with the Fulham forward set to cost £12m, the Owls have been looking at cheaper options and that includes Fletcher who is a free agent. However Wednesday come in at a disadvantage as they will not be able to offer top tier football at Hull, Champions League football at Celtic and more money at Aston Villa.
