Barnsley & Peterborough agree fee for Football League star

Sky Sports understands that Barnsley and Peterborough United have both agreed a fee with Colchester United over the signing of in-demand George Moncur. It is believed to be an upright fee of £500,000, rising to £750,000 including certain clauses.

The 22-year-old has held talks with both clubs but is certainly deciding on the move. It is likely that the former West Ham United youngster will decide between these two clubs, unless a latecomer enters the fray.

Barnsley have been hot on the heels of Moncur ever since they sealed promotion into the Championship thanks to their Play-Off final victory against Millwall at Wembley in May. With Colchester relegated into League Two, the Tykes can offer Moncur football at two leagues higher, just one off the Premier League. Caretaker Paul Heckingbottom is expected to be confirmed the permanent manager at some stage this summer, and it hoping to make Moncur one of his first signings.

The other club in the race, Peterborough, play in League One, but their track record of bringing players through and moving them onto bigger and better things could see them as a big draw to Moncur ahead of Barnsley. With Grant McCann in charge next season, the Posh are set to pull out all of the stops to ensure they are into the Championship next season. Chairman Darragh MacAnthony has already been very busy this summer.

Moncur scored 23 goals in 97 appearances for Colchester, but it remains to be seen if he will be playing his football at Oakwell or London Road next season.
