Sheffield Wednesday legend urges Owls to make a statement like Middlesbrough

Sheffield Wednesday’s Chris Waddle has said in comments made to the Yorkshire Post that the Owls must make a statement signing like Middlesbrough last season to get over their play off heartbreak.

Wednesday came within 90 minutes of getting back into the Premier League for the first time since 2000 but fell at the final hurdle after losing 1-0 to Hull City in the play off final.

And now Waddle, who played for Wednesday between 1992 and 1996 and became a legend for the club when he scored a stunning free kick against fierce rivals Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi final, has said that the club need to make a statement signing much like Middlesbrough did last season.

Following their own disappointing play off final defeat against Norwich City, Middlesbrough went out and made a number of big name signings which included bringing in former player Stewart Downing. They then went on and achieved promotion after finishing 2nd place.

Waddle then theorises that if Wednesday can do something similar, they will be celebrating promotion this time next season. He said: “Wednesday will be in the frame again and you would think they will add three or four players.”

“Middlesbrough lost in the play-off final last year and the year after, seemed to say: ‘Look, we will go up this year.’ And they went out and got players like Downing and made a statement to show they meant business. For me, that is what Wednesday have got to do in the summer.”

“(Carlos) Carvalhal signed 16 players to the players that they already had and he has signed a (competitive) Championship side now. They know what they need now to get out of this league and they have got to be hungry again.”

“But they’ve got to add three or four quality players; five maybe.”

“Two might be loans, but they might be two good signings where people go: ‘Wow.’ That is what they must do to make sure that they go for automatic promotion rather than the play-offs.”
