Morecambe sign Burnley starlet

Morecambe have signed Luke Conlan from Burnley on a free transfer as confirmed by the club website.

The 20-year-old defender had been seen as a talent at Turf Moor but despite being capped by the Northern Ireland U21s on a number of occasions, it was determined that he would never break into the first team and was released from the club following their promotion to the Premier League. But now Conlan can continue his career after penning a two year deal with Morecambe.

After being born in Portaferry, Northern Ireland, Conlan moved to England and came through the Burnley academy. He never made an appearance for the Clarets but instead made his professional debut when out on loan at Scottish club St Mirren, though he only went on to make three appearances for them.

This season he moved on loan to Morecambe and impressed enough in the 16 appearances he made that he should be signed up on a permanent deal.

After the signing of Conlan, Morecambe manager Jim Bentley said: “Luke came in on loan last season and put in some strong performances.”

“He’s young, got plenty of potential and will only get better the more he plays and adapts to football at League 2 level.”
“He’s a good lad with a good attitude and he has a great desire to succeed and progress. We’re very pleased he’s agreed to join us and together we are looking to improve.”
