Charlton Athletic: One of the highest budgets

In Russell Slade’s first press conference with Charlton Athletic, Slade has stated that top 6 finish is an absolute minimum for the South East London side with finances and resources available, according to recent reports.

Slade was challenged by the South London Press, in terms of what finances and budget would be available to the former Cardiff City boss, and what his minimum expectations are for next season.

Slade stated that Charlton Athletic have one of the highest budgets in the League, and a promotion battle is the minimum.

“I would say it would certainly be in that top six, and that will be our minimum requirement, having been relegated.”

Charlton will be looking to make valuable and domestic signings over the next eight weeks before the season starts again, and Slade has already begun work with Steve Head (Chief Scout) to identify key targets.

“Even yesterday we got to work on some targets. There were a few on there I said no I’m not interested in that one, I don’t think that one will improve us – I know the league quite well.

“We’ve crossed them off and we’ve moved on. We’ve got our shortlist and we’re looking at certain areas of the pitch where we feel we need to improve and need a bit more experience.”

He spoke to the Charlton Athletic official media team regarding transfers, and added to what was said at the press conference today.

“That process has started already because we are at the stage of the season where managers are looking to wheel and deal up and down the country,” he explained.
“We are no different. I’ve met with the owner we had some honest and open discussions about the strategy and how to take the club forward.
“We have spoken about certain players possibly coming to the football club. We have put a shortlist together and identified the areas that we need to look at and improve on the field and I have had a huge impact on that.
“We have reduced some players on that list already, have added one or two on and are following things up. The important thing is that we are all on the same page and that everything does go through me so that we know where we stand.”
