Preston seal loan deal for Serie A striker

Preston North End have completed the signing of Palermo striker Simon Makienok on a one-year loan. The 25-year-old Dane spent last season on loan at relegated Charlton Athletic and was recently linked with a move to Leeds United.

Makienok, who has six caps for the Denmark national team, becomes the second signing of the summer by Simon Grayson, the first being Fleetwood Town goalkeeper Chris Maxwell.

Speaking on the news of his latest recruit, Grayson believes that the former Brondby man will prove to be a useful addition to his squad as he offers something different to what they already have,

“I am delighted to add Simon Makienok to our striking options at the Club. His height, plus of course his international experience, brings us a different dimension to the squad and provides us further options at the top end of the pitch.”

The towering centre forward scored five times in Charlton’s relegation campaign last season, starting 22 matches and making a further 14 appearances as a substitute. Two of those five goals came in the same game, the 4-1 away victory over Rotherham United.

The current strikers on the books at Deepdale are Joe Garner, Jermaine Beckford, Jordan Hugill and Stevie May.

Grayson is hoping to add more goals to his team as they ended last season as the lowest scorers in the top half. They actually ended the season as one of the lower overall scorers, with every bottom half side, with the exception of Nottingham Forest and the three relegated clubs, all scoring more.
