Aston Villa rival Liverpool in chase for Ajax winger

Relegated Aston Villa are challenging Premier League clubs to try and sign Ajax winger Anwar El Ghazi according to GianlucaDiMarzi.com. The Dutchman is also attracting interest from both Liverpool and Crystal Palace, who is said to be seeking a move away from the 33-time Eredivisie champions.

Although naturally a club in the Championship would surely be second best in a race for any player against a Premier League club, Roberto Di Matteo has been given a sizeable pop to spend this summer.

Dr Tony Xia is still awaiting approval to complete his takeover of the Villa Park club, and newly appointed Di Matteo has reportedly been given £50million to try and get the club back into the top flight at the first attempt. It would appear El Ghazi is one of his number one targets.

El Ghazi, who has two caps for the Holland national team, played a total of 34 times for both club and county last season, scoring eleven goals in the process. He was only one of three players to reach double digit goals for Ajax in the league last season, as they ended second to PSV Eindhoven.

The player’s agent is Jorge Mendes, the Portuguese football agent that has overseen transfers involving the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo. The tricky winger’s future remains up in the air, but clearly Jurgen Klopp and Alan Pardew are fans of the player too. The question is can Roberto Di Matteo challenge those two and offer a proposition attractive enough to him.
