Northampton midfielder departs for “the biggest club in this division”

Northampton midfielder Danny Rose has signed a two-year contract with League Two side Portsmouth after turning a down new terms with the Cobblers.

Rose aided Northampton to the League Two title, having signed from Oxford in February, within his 15 games.

The 28-year-old played the final game of the season at Pompey’s Fratton Park with Northampton and was “taken aback by the atmosphere”.

Rose has collected a total of 252 career league appearances for a number of previous clubs, including Oxford, Newport and Aldershot.

It was agreed that the former Manchester United trainee and England C international, who is Pompey’s first summer signing after losing in the play-off semi-final to Plymouth, will join Portsmouth on July 1st.

Rose has now won three league titles with three different clubs: he won the Conference South title with Newport County in 2009-10, two seasons later he won the Conference Premier with Fleetwood Town and this season he won the league with the Cobblers.

Rose admitted to the club website that he hopes his new club will be able to follow in the footsteps of his former club and fight for promotion.

“There’s no hiding the fact that this is the biggest club in this division and there will always be certain expectations.

“But I’m sure that the squad we’ve got here – and the players who are sure to arrive – are capable of challenging for promotion.”
