Villa appoint Di Matteo as new manager

Aston Villa announced on Friday morning that Roberto Di Matteo would be taking over at Villa Park.

Villa were relegated last season from the Premier League after finishing 20th with three wins out of their 38 league games.

Di Matteo has a wealth of managerial experience following having previously spent time with Milton Keynes Dons, West Bromwich Albion, Chelsea and – more recently – Bundesliga side Schalke 04.

The 46-year-old led West Bromwich Albion to promotion to the Premier League back in 2010 with a second-placed finish, eleven points behind champions Newcastle United.

As a caretaker manager at Stamford Bridge he led Chelsea to a title double, triumphing 2-1 over Liverpool and fourteen days later he secured football’s highest accolade in club football – the Champions League after winning 4-3 on penalties against Bayern Munich.

He was dismissed later that year and it was two years before he was back in the managerial hot seat.

The former Lazio and Chelsea midfielder’s latest managerial appointment was with Bundesliga side Schalke 04 for seven months.

Speaking about his appointment as the Villans manager Roberto Di Matteo said,

“It’s a wonderful honour for me to become manager of this great football club and I’m looking forward to the challenge of taking Aston Villa back to its rightful place.”
