Di Matteo & Clarke: New Aston Villa management team

Aston Villa have appointed Roberto Di Matteo as their new manager according to the BBC. The Sun reports that the Italian, who guided Chelsea to the Champions League title in 2012, will name ex-Reading and West Brom boss Steve Clarke as his assistant manager.

Whilst the move is yet to be official confirmed by Aston Villa, it will do so in the coming hours or days. He takes over at Villa Park, with the club plying their trade in the Championship after relegation from the Premier League.

The 46-year-old has been out of work since exiting his role at Schalke 04 in May 2015 after just 33 games in charge. Prior to this he was manager of Chelsea, with whom he also won the FA Cup in the same season they triumphed against Bayern Munich in the Champions League. He has experience of the Championship from his time at West Brom, where they finished runners up in 2010. He cut his managerial teeth at MK Dons in 08/09.

He reunites with Clarke, who he played with during their time together at Chelsea. He has experience on managing in the Championship in more recent years from his time at Reading, where he was sacked in December 2015.

Dr Tony Xia is awaiting official confirmation of his approval to take over Aston Villa. He has promised the new manager with funds to strengthen the squad as they try to assemble a team capable o earning immediate promotion back into the top flight.
