Shola Ameobi has been released by Fleetwood Town and the Newcastle legend is now looking for a new club.

The 34-year-old has struggled to settle since leaving Newcastle but is determined to keep playing football.

Ameobi is loved amongst the Toon faithful for his penchant for scoring against rivals Sunderland, which earned him the nickname ‘The Mackem Slayer’, as well as scoring important goals despite his average overall record.

Ameobi scored just 53 times in 312 appearances for Newcastle before leaving the club in 2014, joining Turkish side Gaziantep, before playing briefly for Crystal Palace.

He signed for Bolton Wanderers during their ultimately unsuccessful season this year, but endeared himself to the fans by offering to play for free.

Fleetwood took a gamble on him in League One, where he played 10 times and scored just once, which has led them to release him.

Newcastle themselves are reportedly looking for a striker, with Ross McCormack being linked to the team in recent times, but Shola Ameobi is probably not the man to fire them back to the Premier League.

Ameobi will likely stay in England, and there is likely to be some suitors in the lower leagues. He has shown he is willing to take lower wages just to play and a League One or Two team will surely take a gamble on the Nigerian International.
