Loan defender to seal permanent move to League One champions

Wigan Athletic manager Gary Caldwell has revealed that defender Stephen Warnock will join the club on a permanent basis this summer. Subject to him passing a medical, the former Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers left back will turn his successful loan deal into a full-time transfer.

The 34-year-old hasn’t been offered a new contract with Derby County, who appointed Nigel Pearson as their new manager earlier in the week. Caldwell is now set to add the experienced full back on a one-year deal.

Caldwell, who guided the Latics to the League One title, insisted that penning a permanent deal for Warnock was one of his top priorities this summer in relation to recruitment,

“Bringing Stephen in permanently was one of our immediate transfer priorities. His experience will be invaluable to the squad in the Championship, a league he knows very well. Everyone saw for themselves his contribution last season and we are delighted he will be with us next season.”

Warnock impressed during his loan spell, which lasted 11 games and the player himself said it was an easy decision to make his DW Stadium move permanent, considering the success the club had and how much he enjoyed his time with the Greater Manchester club,

“I’m delighted to get my future sorted out and I’m really looking forward to the new season after promotion.  I really enjoyed my time on loan and we achieved something great, so I can’t wait to be working with the gaffer and this group of players again.

“It’s a great club to be at, so I’m very happy to stay here, especially after the success we’ve had recently.”

Warnock also has two England caps to his name, and he’ll be hoping to add promotion to the Premier League to that honours reel during his permanent spell with Wigan Athletic.
