Hull City promoted to the Premier League

Hull City have secured a return to the Premier League at the first time of asking after securing a 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship Play Off Final at Wembley Stadium.

In an evenly contested encounter, Mo Diame was the hero of the hour when he struck a stunning strike into the net from long range mid way through the second half.

The first half saw Sheffield Wednesday test Hull City goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic on two occasions from set pieces after poor challenges from Michael Dawson and Mo Diame on the edge of their own box while at the other end Keiran Lee had to be alert to clear a chance off his own goal line with feint appeals from the Hull City players that the Wednesday man had committed a hand ball.

After a goalless first half, Hull City really should have taken the lead just before the hour but Andy Robertson produced a glaring miss from a Moses Odubajo cross with the goal at his mercy.

In the 72nd minute, the deadlock was broken when Owls keeper Keiren Westwood was beaten by a Mo Diame long range wonder strike. The goal was harsh on Westwood who had put in a superb individual performance with an array of excellent saves.

Wednesday tried to provide a fightback but were unable to find an equalising goal as Hull City secured a return to the Premier League after just 12 months away.
