The ex-Cardiff City Manager Russell Slade is the new favourite for the Charlton Athletic managerial vacancy according to recent reports.

Rumour has it that Russell Slade has become the new main target for the Addicks, after Sheffield United stealing Chris Wilder, and even after talks with Billy Davies and Nigel Adkins.

Slade took the Bluebirds to just outside the playoffs in 8th position last season, and accrued a total of 68 points. However, despite the reasonably good efforts and performance by Slade and his side, the club and owner Vincent Tan believed that the performance last season was not sufficient.

The general consensus was that Slade under-performed for the side and the resources he had at his disposal, but I think it is worth keeping in mind the oddness of last season, with three top teams finishing with points in the 90s, or very close to it, as well as the Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions imposed on Cardiff City in the January transfer window.

Last week, Paul Trollope replaced Slade, but Vincent Tan offered Slade a Head of Football role at the Bluebirds – an elegant way to fire someone by creating a brand new role for them, personally, I would take that as a kick in the teeth and head to another club, but not sure if that club would be Charlton Athletic.

The Head of Football at Cardiff City, according to some bookmakers is 2 / 1 to get the job, but other bookmakers recently had Nigel Adkins at 1 / 1 for a couple of days, so it is still too difficult to predict who our next manager is going to be, but we know one thing, he is definitely going to be British.
