McClaren rebuffed for Rotherham job after expressing interest

Former Newcastle United and England manager Steve McClaren is unlikely to become the next manager of Rotherham United. The Sheffield Star understands that the one-time Derby County and Nottingham Forest boss had expressed an interest in succeeding Neil Warnock, but the club are said to be focusing their attentions elsewhere.

Ex-Blackburn Rovers manager Gary Bowyer remains the outright favourite, with the Millers expected to conduct interviews for the post next week, with Bowyer expected to be one of those spoken to.

Chairman Tony Stewart is said to prefer talking to a candidate with experience at Championship level, which wouldn’t necessarily rule out McClaren on those grounds. However it is believed that any potential deal is ‘unlikely’.

The New York Stadium club are on the lookout for a new manager after Neil Warnock elected to move on and not agree a contract extension. He guided the club to an unlikely survival from relegation, after taking over the club in a helpless position. He has been heavily linked with the Blackburn job.

Prior to Neil Redfearn getting the job earlier this season, candidates such as Hibs boss Alan Stubbs, Southend United’s Phil Brown and Fulham coach Stuart Gray were said to be under consideration. Throw in names such as Dougie Freedman, in addition to Bowyer and you won’t be far off knowing who is likely to be the next Rotherham United manager.

McClaren is looking to rebuild his managerial reputation after a highly unsuccessful spell in the North East with Newcastle United.
