Moyes odds-on for Villa job after Xia meeting

Soon-to-be confirmed Aston Villa owner Dr Tony Xia has met with David Moyes to discuss becoming the new manager of the club. The Telegraph understands that the former Man Utd, Everton and Real Sociedad boss wants certain assurances from the owner before committing to the job.

Roberto Di Matteo and Nigel Pearson are other names said to be in the reckoning but the Villa Park club are said to be putting all of their weight behind attracting Moyes to take over at the Championship club for next season.

Xia, the owner of Recon Group, has all but completely his takeover of the club after Randy Lerner left following ten years at the helm. Previously chairman Steve Hollis was said to have been edging towards ex-Leicester boss Pearson taking charge, but the change in ownership has since led to slightly different thoughts.

The Chinese businessman is quietly confident of making an appointment before this weekend, and considering it was Moyes who has had met most recently, it has led to the Scot becoming odds-on to become the official full time replacement to Remi Garde.

Xia still has to complete a owners’ and directors’ test, which is mandatory for both the Premier League and Football Club. Moyes, who has Football League experience from his time as a player and manager at Preston North End, still wants certain guarantees from the millionaire before accepting any position.

Of course, Moyes is someone whose name has been linked to several managerial vacancies since his time in Spain came to an end. Former club Everton are also searching for a new manager, so naturally his name is linked to the Goodison Park vacancy.
