Gareth Ainsworth

League Two boss on Blackburn manager shortlist

Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth is under serious consideration to become the next manager of Blackburn Rovers, according to the Lancashire Telegraph. In the last few days, Ainsworth, who was born in Blackburn and lifelong fan, has become the odds-on favourite to take the job.

The 43-year-old guided the Chairboys to the League Two Play-Off Final in 2015, a season after he guided them to safety on the final day of the season. He signed a five-and-a-half year contract over a year ago, but would find it hard to turn Rovers down if they approached him.

It is believed that the club are waiting for the thumbs-up from the Venky’s owners before they begin an interview process. Other names linked to the role include Neil Warnock, Keith Hill, Alan Stubbs and Craig Hignett.

Back in October 2012, when speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph in an interview. Ainsworth, who was only just beginning his tenure at Adams Park, revealed that becoming Blackburn manager would be his ‘dream job’,

“I never played for the club but maybe I could manage them one day.

“It would be my dream job. I’m obviously realistic and I know that I need to prove myself as a manager first.”

A shortlist has been put in place by the football club and Ainsworth’s name is believed to be amongst those. He came through the youth ranks at the club, but wasn’t offered a professional contract and subsequently moved to Northwich Victoria.

Prior to taking the job at Wycombe, the former winger was caretaker manager of Queens Park Rangers on two occasions.
