Preston add goalkeeper Maxwell from Fleetwood

Preston North End have confirmed the signing of Fleetwood Town goalkeeper Chris Maxwell. He joins the club on a three-year deal from July 1st, which is when his current Fleetwood contract comes to an end.

The 25-year-old has an outside chance of appearing at the European Championships this summer for Wales, having been named amongst the standby’s by Chris Coleman. He moves to Deepdale after four seasons with the Cod Army.

During his time at Highbury Stadium, the Welshman won the Club Player of the Year Award and was also nominated for the North West Football Awards’ League One player of the year as well. In addition to that, he was promoted through the League Two play-offs under Graham Alexander in 2014.

Speaking about his move, Maxwell is exciting to be joining a big club such as Preston, who he describes as ‘the biggest club in Lancashire’ and has set his sights on claiming the number one jersey,

“It’s a fantastic club, it’s the biggest club in Lancashire and I’ve heard nothing but positive things about it and it’s a really exciting time for me.

“I’ve had plenty of advice from people who have spent many, many years here and there’s nothing but positive feedback.

“I want to be the number one for Preston North End, it’s as simple as that. I will fight day in, day out for that and when my chance comes I will make sure I take it and that is my main aim.

“It’s a fantastic stadium, fantastic atmosphere and it’s one that you want to play in week in, week out. It’s perfect for me, and I just want to get going now.”

Manager Simon Grayson was thrilled to sign the ex-Wrexham shot-stopper, who is expected to be the first of two goalkeepers moving to Preston this summer,

“Chris is another hungry young player, with the right attitude and we are looking forward to working with him.

“He has done very well down the road at Fleetwood and this is an opportunity for him to step up to the Championship and show what he is about once more.

“We had two goalkeeping vacancies to fill this summer and we now have one of those filled and when we complete the group it will be another competitive position with everyone fighting for their shirt.”

Maxwell will certainly be looking to prove his worth to his new team-mates when they emerge for pre-season training in a few months time.
