Gary Bowyer

5 candidates for the Northampton Town job

Whilst it has been an excellent season for Northampton Town, winning the Sky Bet League Two title, the last few weeks have certainly brought about mixed emotions for everyone connected with the club. They collected the trophy, but manager Chris Wilder left.

First Wilder spoke to Charlton Athletic, before taking over at Sheffield United, the club he used to play for and support. Therefore, Kelvin Thomas is looking for his replacement at Sixfields.

We have brought it upon ourselves to do the hard work and let you know who the early movers are in the betting market to become the next Cobblers boss. There are five names which stand out above the rest. So sit back, relax and have a read of the five likely candidates to become the next Northampton Town manager.

Gary Bowyer (previous club Blackburn Rovers)

This man is the current favourite to take over from the departed Wilder. He has been linked to a few vacancies since his departure from Blackburn Rovers earlier this season, most recently the job at still-managerless Bolton Wanderers. Since his exit in November 2015, he has been looking for a route back into the game.

He enjoyed over 100 games in charge, gaining a win percentage of 34. It was a difficult job for him to walk into, even though he had been the caretaker manager prior to being given the job permanently. Following an indifferent run of form he left the club, but he did endure his fair share of bad luck in the role. He made Blackburn competitive and guided them away from relegation trouble. Some felt he was harshly sacked at the time, but it wasn’t a major surprise.

There has to be some substance to his link to the Northampton job. He isn’t necessarily the first name you think of when deciding who could potentially take over. He is the type of manager that could do well at Sixfields though. He would be taking over a winning squad of players and they have momentum. Bowyer is arguably at his best on the training field and that is where Northampton will need to spend some time in order to cope with the transition from League Two to League One.
