Prem interest in Sheffield United keeper

Sheffield United have offered a new deal to goalkeeper George Long amid interest from premier league new boys Middlesbrough and West Brom on.

According to HITC Sport The blades face a battle to hang on to the young stopper who came through the ranks at the club who is out of contract in the summer and as of yet, have been unable to successfully negotiate a contract.

News of Long’ s potential availability has generated interest from premier league clubs Middlesbrough and West Brom who are thought to be admirers of the youngster and are in the market for a goalkeeper to boost their squads in preparation for the coming season.

Long has had loan spells with Oxford and Motherwell in the last two years but this year has broken through and cemented his place as number 1. However the season has been a disappointment for the club as a whole, with the club failing to achieve promotion and actually even failing to make the play-offs.

The failings today cost manager Neil Adkins his job with Chris Wilder taking over as boss of the league one club.

Fans may be wondering why a young player has been allowed to run his contract down and possibly leave for free this summer, and why it has taken so long for an offer to materialise.

Also the change in manager will create an amount of uncertainty, so the new manager has a challenge on his hands very early in his blades managerial career, if indeed he wants to keep the number one keeper. It’s hard to think he would feel otherwise, especially given that there would be no fee to soften the blow.
