David Dunn

Former player won’t be next Blackburn manager

David Dunn has confirmed to the Lancashire Telegraph that he is not in the running to become the next manager of Blackburn Rovers. The ex-Oldham Athletic boss insists that he is enjoying his coaching role within the Under-21 setup, and doesn’t want to be a manager at this point in his career.

At one point, Dunn was the short-priced favourite to become the successor to Paul Lambert, who elected to leave his role following a lack of assurances from the Venky’s owners.

Recently, Hartlepool United have issued a hands off warning about their own manager Craig Hignett, who is now the new favourite to be the next boss at Ewood Park. Other names linked to the vacancy include Neil Redfearn, Keith Hill and Neil Warnock.

Nevertheless, Dunn not only believes now isn’t the right time for him to take the job, he feels it is vital that the club keep coaches such as Alan Irvine and Rob Kelly at the club,

“There’s a lot of talk about the management at the minute, and what roads and routes we are going to go down, but first of all it’s imperative Rob and Alan stay.

“I really do think that and, if it was me, and I’m seeing loads of different names bandied about, I’d certainly be thinking along the lines of Alan Irvine.”

Dunn spent time in charge at Oldham earlier this season and although it didn’t last for long, he maintains things would’ve improved if he was given the time and that it hasn’t dampened his prospects of going into management again in the future,

“I had that spell at Oldham and, whatever people say, and you can ask quite a lot of people that we worked with, we weren’t a million miles off.

“John came in and did a tremendous job, the six or seven players he brought in had a real impact, which we thought anyway.

“I’m really ambitious, I’m not going to lie, and at some point, yes, all day long, but at this moment in time I’m really enjoying what I’m doing and it’s really important I say that.

“I’m really enjoying my job with the U21s. I don’t even look at it as a job to be honest. I look at it as a gift, which is way I’m grateful to everyone involved for bringing me back.”

It sure proposes to be an interesting summer at Ewood Park, as we all wonder what the answer to that big question is; who will be the next Blackburn Rovers manager?
