Shaun Derry is the latest manager to announce his retained list for the coming season. It isn’t the most eventful of lists in the sense that only four have left Cambridge United and three more have been offered new contracts.

The four players that are leaving are not necessarily types that are regulars and will be greatly missed. Although there is one name which is a slight surprise, mainly because talks over a new deal broke down.

Goalkeeper Chris Dunn is one player who won’t be at the Abbey Stadium next season and he joins fellow goalkeeper Sam Beasant in seeking pastures new. Both enjoyed runs in the team at some point this season, but clearly Derry is looking for more of a permanent number one between the sticks.

Ryan Donaldson also will not be offered an extension and he leaves the club. He is a name that perhaps most outside of Cambridge will be surprised to hear has left. He shot to fame with his fine displays in the FA Cup against Manchester United, but has struggled for consistency this season.

Robbie Simpson is a player that Cambridge seemingly wanted to keep as they did enter talks regarding a new contract. However they have since broken down, meaning he becomes a free agent and can now find a new club.

Josh Coulson, James Dunne and Jimmy Spencer have all been offered fresh terms by Derry. None of these have been accepted as of yet, but discussions continue between the club, players and agents.

Darnell Furlong, Ryan Haynes, Shane O’Neill, Ryan Ledson, Max Clark and Zeli Ismail all move on as their loan deals have since concluded.

Scholar Dylan Williams has also been offered a professional contract, whilst the remainder of the squad remains under contract with the League Two club.
