Sheffield Wednesday eye move for Portuguese league defender

Championship side Sheffield Wednesday are eyeing a move for French defender Yohan Tavares, who plays in the Portuguese side Estoril, according to reports.

Despite still having a chance of promotion, Wednesday are already looking at ways to improve the squad for next season.

The 28-year-old has made 30 appearances in Portugal’s top league this season, and reports say that he has informed his current club that he wishes to move away this summer.

Tavares is out-of-contract at the club and would be free to move to another club without a fee in the upcoming transfer window.

One of those club’s watching his situation is Sheffield Wednesday, who meet Brighton at Hillsborough in their first leg clash of the play-off semi final on Friday evening.

Carlos Carvalhal has already improved his squad significantly this summer, but are outsiders in the betting to seal promotion to the Premier League.

The defender has experience playing in top leagues around Europe, having featured in Serie A for Chievo Verona and in the Belgian league with Standard Liege. Tavares has also featured in the Europa League.

Wednesday face competition from Verona, who are reportedly interested in bringing the player back to Italy.
