Recently-relegated Championship outfit Charlton Athletic are close to appointing Northampton Town boss Chris Wilder as their new manager, according to TalkSport.
Former boss Jose Riga resigned from the club after Saturday’s final day defeat at home to champions Burnley.
TalkSport states that an approach was made for the 48-year-old last week and Wilder travelled to Belgium to talk to Charlton’s owner Roland Duchatelet.
Charlton’s relegation to League One was confirmed back in mid-April, when the Addicks drew with Bolton Wanderers, another side relegated from the Championship, at the Macron Stadium.
The season has been an unhappy one for many Charlton Athletic supporters, with performances on the pitch also being joined with protests off it as fans expressed their displeasure at Duchatelet’s ownership of the club.
Wilder’s spell at Northampton has been nothing short of fantastic, having taken them from the bottom end of League Two to champions of the division and a League One side next season. Northampton will meet Charlton in the league during the 2016/17 campaign.
Duchatelet has worked his way through managers since taking over at Charlton, having made five appointments in two-and-a-half years at the club.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the club, TalkSport also states that Wilder has been assured by the Belgian that he will be given time to put his stamp on the club and also has been told he will have full control over transfers.
