5 factors to Leeds United success next season

Solidify the back four

You only have to look at the success story of Leicester City in winning the Premier League title, and what Atletico Madrid have done in recent seasons. It is amazing what a strong defensive foundation can do. Going forward Leeds have good quality and they’ll look to build upon that in their summer recruitment undoubtedly as well. However as George Graham always tended to do in his Arsenal days, sorting out the back four is the number one priority.

At the moment, it would appear that Gaetano Berardi, Sol Bamba, Liam Cooper and Charlie Taylor is the first choice back four is everyone is fit and available for selection. Berardi being injured could make it hard for him to stake a place during pre-season. Nevertheless, if that is going to be the defensive four then stick with it. In the Championship of all leagues, it is arguably more important what you do offer the ball than what you do with it. Burnley and Middlesbrough are the top two at the time of writing, and along with Hull, have the best defensive records in the league. Fulham, who are just above the relegation zone have scored more than Middlesbrough, so being strong at the back is key.

Steve Evans would love a pre-season with his team to sort out this side to their game. Of course it is very much unclear if he will get that opportunity. You get the feeling that whoever the manager is may want to get another centre back though the door anyway. The goalkeeping situation is a slight unknown too, with Marco Silvestri coming under criticism some weeks but then looking unbeatable on other occasions. This season of all years has suggested a slight chance in the footballing dynamics, and being stronger defensively is more important than ever before.
