Burnley have taken another step towards a return to the Premier League after recording a narrow 1-0 victory over bitter local rivals Preston North End at Deepdale.
No nonsense midfielder Joey Barton scored the only goal of the match after just six minutes when his free kick cruelly deflected beyond Preston North End goalkeeper Chris Kirkland to spark scenes of joy in the away end.
The result sends Burnley back to the Championship summit although promotion rivals Middlesbrough and Brighton & Hove Albion are set to face their latest league challenges tomorrow. After tonight’s match, Burnley fans took to Twitter to express their delight in grabbing the derby day bragging rights.
