Five things Posh need to do to win promotion next season

2) Buy for the present, rather than the future. Posh have made a habit of buying cheap strikers and selling them on for a significant profit, but if we’re to become a Championship club, we need to buy players who are going to perform now. The signing of Tom Nichols in January was clearly one for the future, but it wasn’t what we needed. We needed someone to come in who was going to score the goals Conor Washington had previously. Graham Westley has a big summer ahead of him, and he’ll know that Posh fans will be expecting a few big names to come to the club. They’ve also got to make the most of the loan market. This season, the loan signing of Martin Samuelsen sent a buzz all around the ABAX stadium, but we need more players like that.

3) Sort out our discipline. Peterborough United have the worst disciplinary record in the top four divisions of English football. They’ve amassed over 100 yellow cards, as well as seven red cards. The most recent came from Chris Forrester, who was stupidly sent off at Barnsley. During one game this season, Posh were reduced to nine men after Ricardo Santos and Michael Smith were both dismissed. Posh somehow won that game at Chesterfield, but if they’re to challenge they can’t afford to be playing games with fewer men than the opposition. The squad is young, and is bound to make mistakes, but that’s something Westley is going have to work hard at over the summer.
