Is Roland Duchâtelet ready to sell the club?

On Saturday, when the Addicks took on the Rams at the Valley, the fanzine, Voice of the Valley revealed that former Charlton Defender Paul Elliot is leading a takeover bid for the struggling club.

Rumours in South East London are spreading like wild fire in Charlton, that the infamous owner, Roland Duchâtelet is willing to sell the ex-Premier League side for £38 million according to reports.

Ex-Charlton Athletic defender, Paul Elliot has been witnessed visiting Charlton Athletic and watching the games over the past few weeks, and apparently is the leading face of a consortium wanting to purchase the South East London side.

Roland Duchâtelet originally purchased the Addicks for £18 million back in January 2014, baring in mind that the season before Duchâtelet purchased the club, the Addicks were three points from a Play-Off position despite that being the first season the side had returned to the second-tier of English football.

Now, despite the fact that the South East London side is facing imminent relegation, with their head-to-head clash on Tuesday against Bolton, possibly mathematically relegating them, the owner is asking for £20 million (£38 million) on top of what he originally bought them for, even though since he has become owner, the situation at the club has become dire.

The Voice of the Valley fanzine stated the following:

“Elliott first made this interest known through chairman Richard Murray before Christmas.

“But with protests intensifying and relegation looming, we have been told the club has been more responsive in recent weeks, which led to the emergence of a potential asking price.”

Late last year, Roland Duchâtelet had interest by ex-Chief Executive Peter Varney, who also stated that he had a large mysterious backer interested in the club, meaning Roland Duchâtelet now has two potential interests for the takeover of the club. However, many are hoping that the price he is asking for, is one which is his top-end number, and is willing to negotiate much lower than £38 million.
