It was the late, late show once again but big money signing Jordan Rhodes hit a brace as Middlesbrough came from behind to beat relegated Bolton Wanderers to go 4 points clear of Brighton and stay at the top of the table ahead of second placed Burnley who are 2 points behind.
Middlesbrough have now won 7 consecutive games and have gained the tag of the stoppage time kings with injury time goals against Hull, Reading and now Bolton. They are showing a real spirit amongst their ranks and have put a bit of daylight between themselves and automatic promotion rivals with only 4 games remaining.
Boro looked in control during the early part of the game but failed to make their quality tell in the final third with the final ball and the decision making poor. Then the inevitable happened and Bolton scored on the hour mark through Josh Vela. The signs had been there and Bolton, who had last won at the beginning of February were causing problems with Zac Clough once again looking like he may be a promising prospect for the future. But Bolton have conceded 78 goals this season and so with half an hour left Boro fans must still have felt they had a chance.
Step forward hero Jordan Rhodes. Surely it was always going to be a question of when and not if he gets the goals, he is proven and his record suggests he will score goals wherever he goes. He duly obliged with two strikers goals and the scenes following his deft header were in the 91st minute were ones of ecstasy and elation.
The emotional roller coaster was evident on twitter too. Boro fan, actor and producer of comedy ‘believe’ Boro videos Neil Grainger tweeted..
