5 key potential absentees in the Championship this weekend

Gary Hooper (Sheffield Wednesday)

Whilst Carlos Carvalhal has confirmed good news about the fitness of Glenn Loovens, who will return to the squad to face Ipswich Town this weekend, he is unsure about Gary Hooper. Following the pre-match press briefing on Friday, Sheffield Star sport journalist Dom Howson confirmed that Hooper has a ‘small problem’ in addition to Everton loanee Aiden McGeady.

The Owls are perhaps better catered to deal with the absence of McGeady, considering they have the likes of Ross Wallace who can come straight back into the side. Although Atdhe Nuhiu and Lucas Joao could play as the lone striker if Hooper misses out again, neither simply bring what Hooper offers.

He is probably the best finisher in the division if given the service. He is a proven goalscorer and it is no surprise that Carvalhal was so desperate to sign him permanent in January form Norwich City. He has scored five out of 13 league appearances so far, and the best is yet to come from him. His relationship with the creative Fernando Forestieri is another key area that Wednesday get plenty of joy out of.

Sheff Wed suffered a 4-1 home defeat to Bristol City last weekend and will be determined to get back to winning ways. Hopefully for their sake, Hooper is passed fit. Cardiff City and Russell Slade would prefer it if he wasn’t available, as they look to overhaul the five-point gap to the top-six.
