The Top 5 ‘Super Subs’ in the Championship

Sone Aluko (Hull City)

It has been a frustrating season for this man and last season was as well to be fair. It isn’t easy to mostly act as a regular substitute, especially when every player wants to start and play 90 minutes every week if fit and well. Certain players just seem more suited to that role that others however, and Sone Aluko perhaps fits the bill better than most too. So far, 15 of his 23 Championship appearances this season have been as a substitute.

In recent times, he has been enjoying a few more starts in the team, firstly as a reward for his fine showings off the bench and secondly because of the lack of form of others. He is another type that is at his best playing in a number ten role, although he does act as a lone striker/False Nine type of player as well. He injects something into the game compared to your usual preferred substitute. He isn’t a target man, he isn’t necessarily an out-and-out striker, but he offers creativity and trickery.

Three goals this season is another indicator that he isn’t a natural finisher or necessarily gets into such positions on a regular basis. He tends to drop quite deep and then pick out passes, take players on and just generally make things happen. He provides something which Hull don’t necessarily possess elsewhere in their strong squad, so he certainly has a big role to play later in matches.
