The Top 5 ‘Super Subs’ in the Championship

Lucas Joao (Sheffield Wednesday)

Portugal are not blessed with too many strikers, which seems almost impossible to believe, but the fact a Championship player has been called up this season could be seen as desperate. Ask any Owls fans about Lucas Joao though and they’ll respond with only good things. He made his name with Nacional in the Primeira Liga and has continued his positive play at Hillsborough.

To date, he has made 23 appearances as a substitute for Sheff Wed in the Championship this season. Overall he has scored six goals as well, in addition to two more in cup competitions as well. Joao possesses everything that you want in the form of a substitute. He is skilful, he has pace, he is direct and ultimately he can grab a goal.

Carlos Carvalhal has a very good squad at his disposal and plenty of options when he turns around and looks towards his bench. It is no surprise that the Owls score so many late goals in matches, given the quality they have available. Joao probably headlines those options. He is best effective when playing with a big man up front, but he can also play on the left side as well, where he can use his pace to create as opposed to taking chances.
