Kyle Lafferty

Lafferty’s Birmingham career could be over already

The Birmingham Mail is reporting that The Irish Sun understands Kyle Lafferty has picked up a potentially season-ending injury whilst away on international duty. Although his chances of playing at Euro 2016 remain high, the recent Birmingham City loan signing may struggle to appear for the Blues.

The long-time Leeds United target appeared as a second-half substitute in Monday night’s friendly win over Slovenia at Windsor Park. However a groin injury he has sustained could rule him out for up to six weeks.

The anticipated duration of this injury would almost certainly mean he won’t appear in any Sky Bet Championship game before the season is over. Although none of this has yet to be officially confirmed by Birmingham, Lafferty’s parent club Norwich City or anyone connected within the Northern Ireland setup, it could potentially be a big blow to Gary Rowett. It was hoped the signing of Lafferty could help Birmingham make a serious assault on the last play-off place, whilst easing the burden on lone striker Clayton Donaldson.

The concerned parties are said to be waiting for test results to determine the extent of the injury Lafferty sustained in Belfast earlier this week.

April is a huge month for Birmingham, where they play eight matches that will essentially determine where they will finish in the Championship come the end of the season. Lafferty himself had been hoping to play regular club football ahead of an appearance for his country in France this summer. It is hardly the best preparation for him either, especially considering the amount of importance placed upon him by national boss Michael O’Neill. As for Rowett, he will just be hoping the news is not as bad as first feared.
