Cellino wants Cannavaro as next Leeds head coach

The Daily Mail understands that Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino is considering the prospect of hiring ex-Real Madrid and Juventus defender Fabio Cannavaro as their new head coach next season. The Italian, who won the World Cup In 2006, left his role as manager of Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr last month.

Speculation has been rife in the last few days that Cellino is unhappy with Evans in charge and supposedly told various members of the crowd at the Huddersfield Town game last weekend that he plans on making a change.

Evans insists it is very much business as usual at this moment in time. Today he was at Thorp Arch making preparations for their clash with his former club Rotherham United after the international break.

Cannavaro however has also expressed an interest in succeeding Antonio Conte as the Italian national team coach, with Conte highly likely to be coaching in the Premier League with Chelsea next season. The 42-year-old does possess very brief coaching and managerial experience. In addition to his spell in Saudi Arabia, he has coached Guangzhou Evergrande in the Chinese Super League for less than a season, whilst he began his coaching career in the UAE Pro League with Al-Ahli.

It is understood that Cellino is much happier with how the club is being ran under Paul Bell, who replaced Adam Pearson as executive director earlier this year, but is clearly unsure about the football management side of things. An insider has told the Daily Mail that Cellino ‘would never open his wallet’ for Evans and that a director of football could be appointed shortly.

Evans expects to see out the season with the Elland Road club but it appears highly unlikely that he will have his rolling contract extending beyond this campaign. Fabio Cannavaro seems like a wild, whacky and out of the ordinary appointment for it to be perfectly logical for Massimo Cellino and Leeds United. Time will tell on that one.
